Maze wins Hornet 50: Meyer unofficial points Champ
By: Montana Ziglar
The last race of the 2008 season was Saturday night with seven classes of cars on the track. Racing went out in true Montana style with exciting racing, and even backwards racing. At ten laps to go in the Hornet Enduro 50 the cars were turned away so the new quote was “go fast, turn right,” a new way of racing for drivers.
Hornets had the fast time of the night with a 17.683 awarded to Katie Pilsch in the 6. The 37 of Kyle Kohler won the trophy dash and the B heat went to the 61 of Dirk Meyer. During the heat Meyer went into the 88 of CJ Elkins. The A heat went to the 81 of Harvey Maze after a three car battle for the lead. The main event was an exciting race and the final race of the 08 season. The first caution came out at 35 to go when the 77 of Brandon Cowden went around in the front stretch. With 34 to go the 31 of Cody Evenson went around. At 30 laps remaining, the 6 of Pilsch hit into another car bringing out a caution, and mechanical flag. After returning to the track for the restart Pilsch hit into the front stretch wall and again received the mechanical flag for leaking fluid in the track. With 16 to go the 37 of Kohler had car trouble and left the track. With eleven to go the 77 got a flat tire, and at ten to go the 88x also got a flat tire. At ten laps remaining, after the tire trouble, the race was inverted so the cars raced the last ten laps going clockwise around the track. All cars had a hard time driving backwards. Meyer in the 61was the overall points champion with 473 points.
Harvey Maze the winner of the main event said it was very squirrelly the last ten laps when everything was turned around. “It’s my first main event win and it feels great, my car was fast very fast,” Maze said after his win.
Hobbystocks had the fast time of the night with a 15.100 awarded to the 92 of Dave Oldham who came in second place in the overall points by nine points. The trophy dash was won by the 00 of Chuck Swoope. The heat went to the 92 of Oldham . Before the first lap of the dash was complete the 00 of Swoope the 15 of Forest Bower and the 84 of Dustin Martel were all involved in a crash. The main event was won by the 84 of Dustin Martel who also won the points championship with 564 points.
Scott Lee in the thunder roadsters got the fast time of the night with a 14.406. The heat was won by the 09 of Larry Gerek. The heat was won by the 22 of Scott Dalla in his new roadster. The main event was also won by Dalla after taking a far lead.
Bill Mitchell in the 44 compact had the fast time of the night with a 15.364. The dash was won by the 28 of Russel Smyth who took all three events, the dash, heat and main. The 65 of Jeff Carter spun out and the 11 of B & F Rehn went hard into him with 18 to go. The 11 left the track with his right front tire rubbing.
Ray Young in the 76 Bomber received the fast time with a 16.86. The 8 of Bill McCallum won the dash. The heat was won by the 76 of Young after the 88 of Seth Hanson paid a visit to the infield and the 67 of Tyler Schweigert had trouble in turn four bringing out a caution with nine to go. Young won with lights flashing. During the main event Schweigert had car problems once again. The 83 of Dave Berglund came out with the victory in the main event. Schweigert and McCallum are tied for championship points with 512 points.
The 37 of Mike Slough received the fast time of the night for Limited Sportsman’s with a 14.532. The dash was won by the 15 of Adam Kinkel. Zack Mongan in the 42 won the heat after taking a nice lead. The main event was won by the 2 of Dan Morris.
Legends were also back this week. John Hilliker once again received the fast time of the night with a 14.838. The trophy dash was won by the 23 of Brandon Sickler after the 52 of Adam Bishop and the 23 of Sickler hit into each other. The B heat was won by the 22 of Scott Dalla, and the A heat was won by the 52 of Bishop. The main event was won by the 15 of Scott Moore after an exciting start. During the start of the race the 6 led the race but soon the 6 of Don Sanderson and the 14 of Zach Havens hit into each other and the 8 of John Hilliker spun out while the 55of Trevor Corpron hit the front stretch wall. The race was brought to a red flag. The 56 of Tyler Corpron was unable to race in the main event because during qualifying he hit into the back wall.
Although the race season is over, that doesn’t mean you have to stop supporting racers, or seeing them. October 11 there will be the 18th Annual Awards Banquet at the Hilton Garden Inn. You can buy tickets online.
Raceway Park would like to thank all of its sponsors and fans who made the 2008 season possible. Hope to see you next year.
