Wells becomes two time Champion: Morton takes checkers in Montana
Kalispell, Mont. (9-9-12)- Points chases are in full swing at Montana Raceway Park and the battles and racing are red hot. Saturday Night the Kalispell Toyota Super Late Models wrapped up their season. Also competing were the Flathead Beacon Bombers, Hornets, and Mini Cups. Miller Lite, Kalispell Toyota, and Shadow Enterprises presented the nights events.
Ryan Krause led the points chase into the weekend for the Hornet division. Keith Sheppard set fast time. Dennis Galloway saw the checkers fly and took home the hardware in the trophy dash. Sheppard and Krause battled in the heat race with Sheppard taking the Heat win. Krause has been a determined driver who has kept gaining momentum throughout the season. In the main event Tyler Volkman started on the pole and was passed by Krause on lap 7. Sheppard started fifth and worked through traffic, eventually moving into second place. With Krause getting the early lead Sheppard ran out of time, this allowed Krause to claim the win. This was Krause’s first win in the Hornet division. With one race remaining in the season Krause leads the charge by 9 points over Sheppard.
For the first time this season the Mini Cup racing series ran on the high banks of Montana Raceway Park. The Future Stars of Racing ranged in age from 8 to 16 years old. This group paired up with the Bandolero division and put on an exhibition event. Brock Denney took the fast time. Autumn Kopeck won the B trophy dash and Brock Denney took the A dash. In the Heat race Brock Denney had the upper hand and claimed the win. Lane Hamilton was the top finishing Mini Cup driver in the Heat race. Brock Denney claimed the main event win for the Bandolero division and Lane Hamilton took the win for the Mini Cup division.
One more race remains in the 2012 racing season for the Flathead Beacon Bombers. Chris Warburton led the points series coming into the weekend. Troy Pilgram started off his night by setting fast time. Bill McCallum won the B trophy dash and Pilgram won the A dash. McCallum edged Josh Norris to win the heat race. In the 30 lap main Bill McCallum took the early lead and held on as a hard charging Zack Mongan tried to pass for the lead. Mongan pushed his car to its limits during the main and was forced to end his night early. Warburton moved to second and tried to move around McCallum. In the end Warburton could not make it around McCallum. McCallum finished first followed by Warburton and Josh Norris. Warburton leads the points by 26 points over McCallum.
With five events in the 2012 season for the Kalispell Toyota Super Late Models, drivers had to keep ahead of the crowd to protect their run at a championship position. Alex Lessor came into the weekend with just three points separating him from defending Kalispell Toyota Super late Model Champion Ryan Wells. Giles Thornton set fast time for the division. Wells took the A trophy dash and Don Staggs claimed the B dash. In the first of two heat races Billy Salmonsen edged Braedon Havens to claim the win. Trevor Emond ran away from Wrango West in the A heat race. Agni Howell has been coming on strong during the final part of the 22nd season of racing at Montana Raceway Park. Howell started on the pole and held off Bodie Morton until lap 30. Howell did not give up, challenging Morton for first until lap 68 when Wells passed and took over second position. Lessor had a hard time during the main event, running near the middle of the pack during the 100 lap feature. In the end Bodie Morton claimed first place, for the second time in 2012. Wells rolled in second, with Howell finishing third. When the points were tabulated Ryan Wells claimed his 2nd Kalispell Toyota Super Late Model Championship, topping Morton by nine points and Lessor by 19 points.
