Sampson goes for checkers in Super Stock 100: Denney Sets new Track Record
Kalispell, Mont. (8-26-12)- Race fans were dazzled last night with close, hard charging racing action in the Hornets, Flathead Beacon Bombers, Northwest Scaled Late Models, and Lucas Oil Super Stocks. The night’s events were sponsored by the Hadwin Family and McDonalds of Kalispell. A number of drivers were big winners last evening, but even the kids were big winners as they had a chance to ride in the stock cars during intermission and had a chance to win a number of scooters given away by McDonalds.
Keith Sheppard has come on strong late in the season in the Hornet division. Coming into the weekend Ryan Krause led the points by 26 over Sheppard. To start off the night Sheppard set fast time for the Hornets. CJ Frahm took the trophy dash win. Sheppard edged Josh Thomas for the Heat race win. In the main event Krause and Thomas were not able to finish the race, this allowed Sheppard to cruise to the winners circle. With two races remaining in the 2012 season Sheppard has chipped away at Krause’s lead. The point difference between the two is 10 points coming out of the weekend.
In the Flathead Beacon Bomber division Chris Warburton set fast time for the night. Troy Pilgram came away with the trophy dash win and edged Warburton to win the Heat Race. In the main event Pilgram took the early lead holding off Warburton until lap 7. Warburton took the lead and raced Zack Mongan. At the end Warburton crossed the line and widened his points lead to 51 points over Mongan.
For the first time this season the Northwest Scaled Late Models took to the track. These drivers compete around the Northwest and Canada. The division was formerly known as the Baby Grands. Trayton Tarr took fast time for the class. Troy Vandenbilche claimed the B-Dash and Nicole Behar beat out Tarr for the A-Dash. Vandenbilche and Tarr battled in the Heat race, in the end Vandenbilche won. In the main event the youngsters put on a show with Tarr taking the checkers followed by Behar, and Mike Hilliker.
A new track record was set Saturday Night in the Lucas Oil Super Stock division. Kevin Denney came out and made the best of an 11 year hiatus from racing and sat the new record of 13.574. Denney’s sons Brock and Bryce are set to move up into the division and Kevin wanted to make sure the car could perform for his sons. Casey Brandt took the B Dash and Micah Sampson claimed the A dash. In the B Heat Bruce Stinger took the win and in the A heat Tyler Corpron edged Scott Lee. Tyler Corpron wanted to shine Saturday night, but lady luck did not favor him in the main event. Corpron led the race early for 14 laps before Micah Sampson passed for the lead. Corpron tried to stay with Sampson, but he also had to contend with lap traffic and a very determined Adam Kinkel. On lap 35 Corpron had mechanical problems that forced him to the pit area for the remainder of the night. This put Sampson and Kinkel in a tight battle for the lead. Kinkel made the pass around Sampson on lap 55 and held on until lap 68. Sampson took the lead from Kinkel and charged ahead. Tylor Schweigert moved to third and worked Kinkel to take over second. In the end it was Sampson at the checkers followed by Schweigert and Kinkel. Lucas Oil Point’s leader Brandon Sickler had his night cut short after he tangled with Corey Reum on lap 33. Sickler continues to lead the points chase by 34 over Corpron.
Three events are left in the 2012 racing season. Coming up this weekend Penco Power Products and Mountain Dew present the Labor Day Spectacular featuring the Don K Hobby Stock 75, Lucas Oil Super Stocks, CHS Legends, and Bandoleros. Time trials begin at 6pm and racing kicks off at 7pm. For tickets and more information log onto montanaracewaypark.com, call 406-257-7223, or like us on Facebook.
