Martel Charges to Hobby Stock 50 win

Kalispell, Mont. (6/17/12) - Warmer weather was a welcome sight in the Flathead Valley Saturday evening.  Drivers were eager to get back on the track after last weekend’s rain out and spectators were looking for some close racing battles.  The Hornets, Flathead Beacon Bombers, Lucas Oil Super Stocks, and Hobby Stock all combined over 200 laps of hard charging racing action for the spectators.

Keith Sheppard set fast time in the Hornets.  Victor Larson, a new-comer to the division won the trophy dash.  Sheppard followed up his fast time with a heat race win.  Sheppard went on to claim the main event win and widen his points lead by 13 over Ryan Krause.  The Hornet division is a great way for fans to get started in racing.  This fun series is an economical division based on front wheel drive cars.  For more information on the division call the track or log online.

In the Flathead Beacon Bomber series Chris Warburton claimed top qualifying honors.  Kyle Koehler edged Bill McCallum for the trophy dash win.  Warburton went on to claim the heat race.  In the main event Koehler, Warburton, and McCallum battled an eager Josh Norris, Zack Mongan, and Troy Pilgram.  In the end Koehler took the checkers followed by McCallum and Warburton.  Upon post race technical inspection Warburton was found in violation of the series rules and penalized.  This allowed Josh Norris to claim third place.  McCallum continues to lead the division by two points over Warburton.

Scott Lee set the mark for the Lucas Oil Super Stocks by setting fast time.  Chuck Swope won the trophy dash and b heat race.  Tyler Corpron came out on top of the A heat race after a feisty battle that ended with only Corpron and Kinkel finishing.  After coming up short in the first three main events of the season Corpron raced Brandon Sickler for the win.  Corpron, a rookie in the Lucas Oil Super Stock division rolled to his first win in the series.  Sickler continues to lead the series by three points over Corpron.

In the first of three larger races for the Don K Hobby Stocks the action was on fire.  The 50 lap event saw two cars catch fire prompting safety official to rush to the scene to extinguish the blazes.  Brandon Martel and Ray Young both had their race nights ended by fires.  Neither was injured.  Marvin Stone took the early lead and held off a hard charging Dustin Martel.  Martel passed Stone late in the race and rolled into victory lane.  Stone claimed second and Josh Robinson rolled in third.  Earlier in the evening Justin Drake set fast time.  Ryder Rindy claimed his first B heat race win and Jason Young took the A Heat.  Dustin Martel and Marvin Stone are neck and neck in the point’s chase, with one point separating them.

The Super Late Models are back in town next week for their final showing before the Montana 200.  Twisted Tea and Napa present the Canadian/American Super Late Model Shootout 125 along with the Hobby Stocks and Bombers.  Time trials at 6pm and racing at 7pm.  To purchase tickets and for more information log onto montanaracewaypark.com, call 406-257-RACE (7223), or like us on Facebook.
